Minutes of the Meeting

The following members of the Supernumerary Committee (the Committee) of the San Francisco Opera (the Opera) were present for all or parts of the meeting:

            Susan Anderson

Irene Bechtel

Mike Harvey

            Priscilla Lore

            Paul Szczesiul

            Kimberly Thompson

            Sally Warren

            Rob Wonder

Also present was Carrie Murphy. Mike served as Chair and Priscilla served as Secretary.

Mike called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. Minutes of the September 27, 2004, meeting were read and approved.

Financial Report: The Financial Report was accepted. There were no expenses and one deposit of $539 from the Bake Sale. Our balance is $1991.42.

Old Business

Bake Sale:  Mike said that the ham was a great success; he will bring a turkey next time. A discussion of condiments ensued. Volunteers for setting up the next Bake Sale included Susan and Priscilla. Discussion followed on timing of when to bring food and what people will bring. It was noted that makeup people appreciated being told about the sale.

New Business

Sara Jobin:  Paul brought up that Sara Jobin would be conducting one performance each of Tosca and Flying Dutchman. He suggested that the Committee send her flowers and a card to wish her luck because she has been exceptionally friendly and supportive of supers.

Fundraising Ideas:  Paul suggested that we sell clothing with a super logo on itbaseball caps, long-sleeved T-shirts, other? He also suggested that an updated logo could be developed for this purpose. He offered to look into the cost of the shirts. Mike said he would look in catalogues for corporate gifts. Orders might be taken over the website as they are for the jackets. It was also suggested that we put the ideas on the website. All thought it a good idea to have the garments ready to sell at the Super Party.

Thank you:  Rob noted that Steve Bauman arranged to have reframed the damaged photo of Joseph Scott Hendrickson, past supercaptain, that hangs in the mens dressing room. He thought it would be a nice gesture to send a thank you to Hovel Emde and to Steve Baum.

Super Party:  Susan opened the discussion of the Super Party. Mike assumed the CostCo shopping and alcohol responsibility. Irene offered to get two half-sheet cakes at CostCo. Also discussed was the cost to supers to attend the party:  it was agreed that $10 a head was still fine, with an exception for those unable to afford it. The party subcommittee (Susan, Irene, and Rob) arranged to meet at the Bake Sale to discuss developments. Susan suggested a raffle for the Bake Sale as a fundraiser, noting that one year Laurel Winzler did a gingerbread house as a prize.

Hammies:  Mike has received some suggestions and will solicit others on the website.

It was strongly suggested that Bruce McNaughton be invited to delay his move to Dayton in order to reprise his role as bartender for the party.

Entertainment for the party was also discussed, including opera karaoke and a questions-on-opera game.

Other Business: Priscilla mentioned that Tom Carlyle thought having a booth at the Castro Fair next year might be a good idea to sell tickets at a discount, as was done at Opera in the Park.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30.

The next meeting will be November 1, 2004, at 6:30 pm in the 4th floor conference room of the Opera House. Paul will act as chair.
