The last thing we did was continue the “bride scene,” which begins happily, but soon gets out of hand. The women stood in a group in the center of the stage while the men walked around us in a circle, practicing their gait and picking out their brides. “Girls, this is a tense moment, you're nervous. It's OK to be concerned, worried, shy . . . but Carolyn doesn't care.” I guess I'm just not that easily intimidated by a bunch of peasants.

The men are apparently unconvincing peasants. The director said that our guys picked up the soldier thing much faster than the original cast in Munich, but that the Germans picked up the farmer/peasant thing much more quickly.
